You may think The Gambler is the story about John Milbanke as it is through his eyes that we first see the story unfold. But then about a quarter of the way in author Katherine Thurston switches protagonists. You then get to read all about Clodagh Asshlin's extremely long and slightly bumpy road to maturity. In her defense, Clo didn't have any responsible adults to help guide her, and the adults she did listen to were the kind she should have been warned away from. She could have used a couple more Hard Knocks from the School of Life, as failure is the best teacher. I'm not totally happy with the ending as I feel Clodagh was ultimately the cause of a tragedy and she should have been made to suffer more. (Heartless, ain't I?)
