Every time I read a book from this series I have to read something a little lighter to get out of this anxious head space these books seem to put me it. This is probably just a problem with me, but the couple in almost every one of these books go through so much crap and actually willingly and purposely cause each other so much pain thru the ENTIRE book that by the end I almost don't want them to be together. They usually "fix" everything right at the end and get together, and most people are happy with that, but sometimes I just don't see HOW they could forgive each other. Anyways, it's emotionally exhausting for me, and makes me anxious (I know, I'm a weirdo), so that why I can't read this series back to back... In case your wondering lol

I liked the character development and struggle between these two. Kresley Cole nailed it again.
Sabine is believed to be an evil sorceress working for the bad guys, but she's really a sorceress who's looking out for herself and her sister. She kidnaps the demon King and imprisons him in his own dungeons, stolen from him a millennia ago by the most evil sorcerer alive.
I agree with a lot of the reviews that its hard to like Sabine. I understand that she came from a "dog eat dog" environment and if you can't trust your siblings ( except for Lanthe) and you are constantly being hunted and murdered for hundreds of years, yeah you can have a bad attitude. Rydstrom is just dreamy to me. I love how he went from uptight guy to bad ass S & M master.. I enjoyed how they turned tables on each other and took turns keeping each other captive and how they would fight and then have "frantic kisses" too funny. A couple of things that just didn't mesh with me was that when they arrived at the refugee camp, why were the demon women in prarie garb? Aren't they "rage demons" , I would expect the women to be crazy wild demons, not wearing long ruffle dresses. And at the end of the book, Sabine returns to being very self centered gold digging bitch and that Rydstrom would just put up with that. That didn't make sense, because you would after going through all that adventure together, she would become a bit nicer. Overall, it was a great read, and I love Kressly's books. I swear I never thought that I would use romance novels as a coping tool when I'm going through rough patches in my life. I love this series as it makes me forget the outside world and gives me a nice escape. Keep it coming Kressly!!
Finally we get to Rydstrom Woede's story. He needs to kill Omort The Deathless, sounds difficult since the guy is... deathless, in order to gain back his throne. This story occurs while his brother is doing his best to procure a blade that will kill Omort the Deathless. Rydstrom has been waiting for his one true mate, even longer than he's been trying to win his kingdom back. And he finds his mate, Sabine, the Queen of Illusions. I wish Sabine had been a little nicer. I feel sorry for Rydstrom, all this waiting and frustration and he finds he's matched with a really mean mate, although we also find she has reasons for being like she is. She hasn't really had the easiest life and although she is also trying desperately to get away from the truly evil Omort, Rydstrom doesn't know this for awhile.

Only a super strong alpha male like Rydstrom could handle Sabine and it is interesting and often frustrating to watch them fall in love with each other while still trying desperately to attain their own personal goals, destroy Omort, gain back the Kingdom and for Sabine, gain her freedom and life from her evil brother Omort.

I enjoy the cast of characters Kresley Cole has created for this series. While this is not my favorite book in the series, I do recommend it. A lot of background to the series is supplied during this book. I still feel sorry for Rydstrom to have such a not so nice mate.
Kiss of a Demon King is the story of Rydstrom Woede, the deposed King of the Rage Demons. I did not expect to like this installment...at all. Rydstrom is...kingly, he is responsible, reasonable, upstanding, honorable, patient, wise and self-sacrificing. He yearns for a "decent, virtuous" demoness as his mate. In short...he sounded like an uptight, lackluster bore and it seemed highly likely that his story would have been a real snoozer. I should have paid attention when he asked Nucking Futz Nix what his future entailed and she responded that it would be " a real doozey"!

KOTDK turned out to be one of my favorite IAD stories. Good King Rydstrom does not get his "decent, virtuous demoness". Instead the Fates choose for his mate Sabine the evil sorceress and Queen of Illusions. Sabine is Awesome! Initially Rydstrom says she brings out the worst in him. What she really does is upset his apple cart and it's pretty funny to see the ever reserved Rydstrom completely losing it.

For Sabine's part - she is not actually evil. Yes, she does lie, cheat and steal - but she's a product of her environment. Where she comes from - that's called survival; and Sabine is nothing if not a survivor. I thought she had an irreverent sense of humor and I enjoyed her affection for Puck, all the while referring to him as an "it".

As usual Nix's cameo appearances stole the show and the pool party was a laugh out loud moment. KOTDK turned out to a very pleasant surprise!
Loved this book as I have all of the Immortals after Dark Series. I would not recommend this for teens (some well described sexual content) but rather for Adults who love romance with a fantasy flair. Its a noice novel though plotwise and I would recommend it to those who like this sort of thing)
