This novel was seriously short. At least it seemed that way. I blew through the book in less than 24 hours. With most of the threats around Galactic Alliance space reduced, the plot had only a couple of ways to go. In a bold move, Mr DePrima decided to introduce another civilization from outside the known area of space as the new antagonist. I say it's bold because the plot line really doesn't hold up to logical analysis. The new enemy is based over 10k light years from GA space. At the highest known velocity of the new aggressor it would take over 21 years to traverse the distance. While the time might not be a deterrence to the new race, the command and control problems as well as resource investment necessary would make the decision to skip intervening states rather extreme.

The story is also a bit more transparent than in the past. I was able to see the solutions used in advance in this book and haven't been able to do so in the past. The action scenes are also light in this book. They aren't described in anywhere near the detail of previous books. The last problem I had with the book was the unexpected and way to early promotion of Carver to Fleet Admiral. This is sure to force her from the main stage and cause one or both of her "sisters" to assume the primary role in future books. Even-though her sisters are exact duplicates, they aren't the same character that we have all known and come to identify with this series.

All that aside, the story is fast paced with good temporal record keeping and editing. I really enjoyed the story as evidenced by how fast I read it. I can highly recommend this book to anyone who has read the series and strongly recommend the series to space opera fans who haven't started the series. In many ways this series is reminiscent of the Honor Harrington tales.

Retreat And Adapt Thomas DePrima 9781619310193 Books Reviews

I found that I enjoyed this volume to be much more than the previous volume (Return to Dakistee). There was a lot more "interesting" stuff going on all over the place here, and for the most part, the story kept me engaged for most of the book.

While I finished this book with an overall satisfaction of the story, there are a few points that remain. One is a plot device involving Arneu near the end of the story. The other thing that gives me pause is with the transverse wave drive and the manner in which it is used for the new weapons delivery system. Both of these things stuck out to me, as devices that could be easily abused, turning them into a crutch. But luckily, I'm not the author (or even _an_ author), so I don't have to worry about making neat accounting, but I do hope it doesn't go where I imagine it can. Yes, I'm being deliberately vague to avoid dropping spoilers.

Anyways, the story continues to grab my interest.
This book is great reading and ties smoothly into the entire series. I also likes the addition of Thor. And as for Strauss, he will try to get back at Jen especially with his different look. Although I do hope he ends the series soon as I am now forced to read hard cover on the latest books. Mr. RePrimanded, perhaps does not realize people dislike having to set up accounts with all the hacking and identity theft going on.
Yeah, I bought it, and I am well satisfied. Probably his best overall effort. Mr. DePrima has improved as a writer over the course of this series. He no longer makes so many "rookie mistakes." He still isn't great at characterization, but his characterization is improving incrementally. Meanwhile, his stories are still strong. I still find myself skimming though a lot of material, looking for just the important points, but I generally found this book to be satisfying and I do recommend it and the entire series. Overall, they are a lot of fun, and I feel more confident in trusting Mr. DePrima to get the job done. It would be good at this point if he could find the time to go back now to the beginning of the series and rewrite all the earlier books to remove some of the mistakes. If he did, then I think he would have an amazing series. Unfortunately, it will probably never happen, but even without that, Mr. DePrima has something here of which he can be very proud.
Overall, I like this series. It's fun. It took me awhile to actually read them because the first book makes it sound like they are going to be some sort of twisted erotica. I was thrilled that they were not anything of the sort.

SPOILER ALERT

Negative -
The primary drawback, so far, is the tendency to waste time focusing on what's going on behind enemy lines. A lot of what was there could have been cut out or greatly reduced. I mean what was the point of the whole raider storyline? The archnemesis gets foiled once again and falls off the radar while the entire board suddenly become estrogen heavy. All that could have been summed up by an aside or tiny little chapter. The primary story did not need the long drawn-out interruptions this, I think, pointless side story caused. This was also a major drawback of David Weber in the Honor Harrington series; he, too, focused too much attention on the politics of the enemies, and, while the development may have aided the author in establishing motive and modus of the enemy camp, it added absolulety nothing for the reader. It was just pages that had to be skimmed and flipped through to get back to the real story.

The author did the same with the bordering nation previously out of contact with all beings in Sectors 2&3. We really didn't need to hear from the unheard-from species until we actually encounter the annoying little ship surfing the borders. What was going on was actually summed up in the encounter at the planet.

The book also had a few minor editorial problems.

Positive-
I enjoyed that we got to see the Carver land grant. I'm looking forward to see what happens during her leave of absence and what the sisters get up to while she's away.
