You have probably had a box lunch that comes with a sandwich, a small bag of chips, a piece of fruit, and a drink. When you opened up that bag of chips, there were only 3 or 4 potato chips in the entire bag. That’s what I felt like after reading Craig Johnson’s Divorce Horse. It was tasty, but there just wasn’t enough to satisfy me. Divorce Horse is called a Walt Longmire Story. Believe me—it’s not a story, but a very short-short story. Plus for the little the reader receives, I thought it was way overpriced.

Craig Johnson wrote Divorce Horse to be a bridge between novels number seven and eight, Hell is Empty and As the Crow Flies. I don’t think that it took me more than 20 minutes to read Divorce Horse. On my Kindle, by the time I scrolled through the cover, a list of other Craig Johnson books, the inside title page, the copyright page, the contents page, the dedication page, and the acknowledgements, I had already read 8% of the book when I reached the first page of the story. Then it ends at 54%. The rest of the book is a preview of As the Crow Flies. The story itself is cute and entertaining. Sheriff Walt Longmire, daughter Cady Longmire and Henry Standing Bear are having dinner at the Busy Bee when they get a call that Tommy Jefferson’s horse has gone missing from the rodeo grounds. This horse played a prominent role in Jefferson’s nasty divorce and for that reason, Walt and his staff have nicknamed him the Divorce Horse. Walt and Henry are soon on the trail of the stolen horse, and Longmire, as always, is awed by his best friend’s skills. “At the other side of the horses, Henry kneeled and placed his fingertips in the impacted dirt. I felt like I always did whenever I followed his intuitive skills. The Bear was a part of everything that went on around him in a way that I could only witness. He had described scenarios to me so clearly from the remnants of events that I would have sworn that I’d been there.”

I have been reading all of Craig Johnson’s Longmire series in order, but from now on, I will skip his e-stories unless I can get them from the library.

Divorce Horse Walt Longmire Mysteries edition by Craig Johnson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was introduced to the Walt Longmire series and can't stop reading them. I was blindly following the "series sequence data" and did not look at the reviews of Divorce Horse. This is a short story that has more of "As the Crow Flies" (the next book in the series) than the primary story. To pay > $4 () for a short story, is nuts. I agree with another comment "this should only cost about $1.50." I am told there are two other short stories, and I will *NOT* get sucked into this trap again. If it was worth my time, and I thought there was a chance of success...I would ask for my $ back.
This e-Book, about 30 pages long is very enjoyable. However, when I came to the end of it, then started book eight (this is called book "7.5" in sequence of the Walt Longmire mysteries) and looked back at it, it seemed as if it was a story idea that Mr. Johnson had, that he just couldn't get to work into a full novel. As a result, you end up with a cute 30 page short story that has nothing to do with either book 7 or book 8, as near as I can tell. Although to be fair, I've still got 75 pages to go in book 8, so I could be surprised, and if I am, I'll come back and edit this.
Fun read, however and worth the $3 plus.
I have read all the Longmire books and watched the TV series faithfully. I love these books and will keep reading them until Craig Johnson dies or I do.. that said, this was the most lighthearted and funny of the series I had yet seen. The Indian Rodeo and the three horse race, was amazing. I recognize it as something that is probably a real event and now want to go to one of these rodeos and see it for myself. I am also waiting for Longmire to show up in my life even though he will have to fight Diana Gabaldon's Jamie Fraser character for my heart. It will be a close fight and I want both guys to win me. .... sigh....desperate love!
These short stories are tasty appetizers to enjoy between the main courses served only once a year, but they are very, very tasty. This one was a delight for all Longmire fans. Walt and his best friend, a good feel for the tone of the Longmire books and an enjoyable tale. Will a man give up his best horse to get a second chance with his wife? An easy question, right? Read the story then if you haven't read the Longmire series, get started, you have a real treat ahead of you.
This would be a cute chapter but should not be sold by itself. I was additionally irritated to actually find that the collection Wait for Signs is mostly these short stories that are numbered between the major books. Buy the collection and check the chapter names before buying the short stories individually.
After watching the first two seasons of Netflix' Longmire I have started reading the series of books it is based on. Craig Johnson is an excellent writer. His ebooks are $10.99 so I've been going to the library. However, when I noticed the few for $3.99 I jumped before I read the fine print (a habit that is becoming more and more common.). Turns out these are novellas. Very short novellas. The writing is as good as ever though.
Hello? Craig Johnson writing about Walt & crew? You know it's gonna be great. My main reason for this review is o pose a question Why in the world did the TV producers not pay any attention to Craig's characters or books? Other than Walt and Ruby, very little connect the two. I love Craig's Longmire books but am totally turned off by the dark twists and convoluted story lines of the TV series. My thoughts, anyway
